Shooting film

I find shooting film to be tricky. If I'm pleased or displeased with the results, I wonder, Was it the film? Was it the camera I used? Was it just the lighting at that time and place? Because I use several different cameras and experiment with several different types of film, I'm never sure. I'd like to think that I could find the sweet combination of film + camera that would give me the best results every time, but photography doesn't work that way. Trial and error and technique. I've got the trial and error part down, but I'm still working on the technique.

We got a new computer recently and I've just started using iPhoto to organize my pictures. I must say, I love it. It's a temperamental beast to start with, but now I think I've figured it out and love how nice and tidy all of my digital images are. What's your method for keeping your photos organized (if at all)?

By the way, all of the images above were shot with a Canon Rebel G + 50mm f/1.8 lens + Kodak Ektar 100.

everyday life on film

I just picked up a couple of rolls of film I shot over the last three months. Toys lost under the couch (and retrieved), some writing, some quiet breakfasts, some nights out with my husband, and some flowers. Life is still good.

daily walks with my son
swim lessons with my son

The great outdoors

Portland is filled with public parks. On Friday the sun was shining, so we took advantage of the dry weather and went for a hike. I broke in my new hiking boots; I hope they'll see a lot of use while we live here.

A new beginning

We've traded Los Angeles for Portland, Oregon. The past few months have been a flurry of packing, preparing, house-selling, house-hunting, and then unpacking. I love our new neighborhood; we're in walking distance to just about anything we need, and we're just minutes from my brother- and sister-in-law and our nephew. A good trade, I'd say.

It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas

Since my maternity leave ended this month, I haven't had time to decorate much for the holidays. No tree for us this year, just a few candles here and there and some wrapped presents in front of the fireplace. Brian's cousin's family hosted a Christmas party dinner a couple of weeks ago, and their home was a very warm and cozy (or hyggelig, as the Danes might say) backdrop for a lovely feast, which included hot chocolate and dozens and dozens of homemade cookies for dessert!

Sequoia Part I

Last weekend our family spent the weekend in Sequoia National Park. We stayed at the Wuksachi Lodge, a small hotel right in the middle of the park. Because there were so many helping hands (i.e., grandparents), I was able to take some photos of this lovely park. There was still snow on the ground from a storm that had passed through earlier in the week, but we had beautiful weather. It was sunny and crisp and perfect for walking through the forest. We saw some deer but no bears, which was fine by me!

Fall

It's been foggy the past few mornings when I wake up to feed Éamonn. You can barely see the trees across the street. I guess that means that fall has arrived, even though we had record high temperatures just a couple weeks ago. The sun still shines during the day and we still have to use the air conditioner, but the air smells different. I love fall.

I like to shoot film sometimes, even if I have to wait a couple of days to get it back from the shop, and even if my shots don't always turnout the way I think they will. I have several analog cameras, and I usually have a roll of film in one of them at any given time. These are some film shots I've taken recently.

Maternity leave

Since the birth of my son earlier this summer I've been on maternity leave. I spend my days walking to the coffee shop around the corner, going to the park and having picnics, playing on the living room floor, and eating early dinners.

Seattle

My best friend was married in Seattle last month, so Brian and I took our eight-week-old son on a his first trip. We stayed at a nice hotel and ate good food and walked to the Space Needle. It was our first family trip, and I'm looking forward to more.
